DIY Weddings in 2012!

Do it yourself weddings have become increasingly popular lately. I think thats partly due to the downturn in the economy, but I also think that many brides just want to have more of a hands-on experience with their wedding décor, not just ordering, but actually having a hand in on some part.

Some brides, who are talented, or have some experience with handling flowers, will tackle the whole wedding, while most will opt for the reception centerpieces, and occasional pieces such as an arrangement for the cake table.

Our part in all of this is usually to supply flowers in bulk. We applaud these brides and will help with flower selection, advice on seasonal types and a few tips on the mechanics that go into an arrangement. If the brides need the flowers processed we will do that for a small additional charge. We don’t offer classes, and we don’t offer space in which the arrangements can be made.

Some brides find that they’ve bitten off more than they can chew, and call asking for help, especially when they are faced with making 20 centerpieces, their volunteer help has run off and they are rapidlyrunning out of time! It is rarely a problem for us to take over the construction and delivery of these at the last minute. We are happy to help out, but we will also be charging fully for the work.

So, if you are a Do-It-Yourself bride, and you’re getting married in Bournemouth, Poole or the surrounding area, come in and see us. We’ll work together to help you have the wedding you’ve always wanted, at a price you can afford.

Your Garden in June

Veggies

  • Remove side shoots from your tomato plants
  • Plant out courgettes, beans, pumpkins and other tender crops
  • Attract beneficial creatures to your veg plot

Fruit

  • Strawberries are ripening fast and  other soft fruits is coming on stream earlier than usual. The  fruitlets on fruit trees are swelling fast. Winter and spring weather have meant a really good fruit set in many parts of the country so there should be some bumper crops.
  • If you are in an area that has had little rain for the past few weeks, keep watering fruit trees and bushes as much as you can, even after it has rained.
  • Now is the time to thin out apples, pears, plums and other tree fruit, and gooseberries too. It is also time to start summer pruning trained fruit

Herbs

  • Grow French tarragon
  • Plant out pots of basil and other tender herbs
  • Keep sowing seed outside to provide continuity of supply
  • Thin seedlings that have been sown direct in the garden
  • Trim shrubby herbs such as cotton lavender and box

What to Plant Now!

Plant lily Bulbs

Plant up pots of your favourite summer-flowering bulbs. Start them off on a warm windowsill.

Finish Pruning Summer Clematis

It’s not too late to prune summer-flowering clematis. This still allows time for the plant to respond well with new spring growth.

Spring Mulch your Veg Patch

Give your beds a boost by adding a thick layer of mulch around plants to lock in moisture and ensure beds don’t dry out.

Dont forget your garden this Christmas!

With Christmas nearly upon us and the possibility or yet more snow on the horizon, everyone tends to forget the garden.

If you haven’t planted bulbs for next spring, we have plenty of tulips and narcissi in stock. Tulips are quite happy being planted this month, early, mid or late and they will sort themselves out and flower at the normal time.

Tender perennials will succumb to winter frost if the crown is unprotected.  To keep them safe until spring cover them with bark mulch.

Tree stakes which are no longer needed can be removed.  The hole left by the stake goes down through the root area.  Fill it with a mixture of good compost with added general purpose fertilizer.  It will be right where it will do most good.

Lining the inside of your greenhouse with bubble wrap will keep it warmer and reduce energy costs if you’re providing additional heat.  Large sheets of white polystyrene can also be used to line the sides below staging level.  Make sure you wash the glass inside and out before you start lining to maximise light levels.  Remove any debris from guttering.

Water plants sparing during the winter months, as they can become waterlogged and prone to rotting.  Check plants weekly and only water if their compost has dried out and avoid getting water on the leaves.
